“Field at Sunset” is an original oil painting by Vera Bondare, capturing the serene beauty of a Latvian landscape at the transition from day to night. Painted in an impressionistic style, the piece skillfully divides the scene into contrasting horizontal bands of color, highlighting the tranquil yet sometimes dramatic interaction between earth and cosmos.
In the lower part of the painting, a dark green hillside transitions smoothly into a turquoise surface on the opposite side of a ravine. These solid horizontal color bands provide a strong foundation for the composition, evoking a sense of solidity, stability, and reliability. This represents the unshakable solidity of the earth.
The upper band of the painting is filled with variations of purple hues, signifying the realm of external, unpredictable cosmic forces. This color choice expresses our dependence on external forces.
The central band of the painting carries the main narrative content. Two groups of trees, each consisting of three (a symbolic number in Christianity), are positioned on either side of a picturesque field covered in blooming flowers of bright orange hues. While one group of trees is already cast in the shadow of the setting sun, the other group is brightly illuminated by its last rays.
This scene evokes the image of two armies on a battlefield, silently facing each other before the moment of inevitable decisions and changes. The land could be stained with losses and sacrifices. This central band symbolizes the fragility and impermanence of our lives, filled with the struggle for survival.
