This painting depicts a quiet, touching winter evening — a view of the courtyard of an orphanage. The focus is on a brightly shining New Year tree, shrouded in lights, like a small miracle in the cold landscape. Around are trees, snow-covered bushes, in the distance are the silhouettes of houses and the horizon, where a thin strip of the setting sun still illuminates the edge of the sky. In the foreground are the windows of the orphanage, behind which, if you look closely, you can see the silhouettes of children.
